The Maryhill Museum of Art lies on a bluff in SE Washington overlooking the Columbia River, the dividing line to Oregon. Mount Hood, one of many volcanoes on the west coast, looms like a watchtower in the distance. A rock garden appearing like chunks of lava rests on gravel. It's a powerful site. Inside the museum are beautiful crafts made by various indigenous peoples, fragments of Rodin sculptures and an eclectic collection of paintings. The mountain draws us out. Its striking beauty casts a spell, reminding viewers of both strength and fragility.
